IAM Driver Skills Days at Knockhill
22nd June 2010
This skills day has been planned to attract drivers who want to improve their road skills it is not intended to be a free for all track day. The venue has been carefully chosen, not because it is a race circuit but because it offers us a very controlled environment away from the usual two way traffic, junctions, pedestrians, and street furniture there will be no Racing, Pace Making or Timing of any kind and only road legal cars will be allowed entry. Therefore, if you are looking to improve your road skills then you can certainly benefit from this type of training. If you are simply looking to put you and your car through its paces then we recommend you try one of the many commercial ‘track-day’ packages available on the market.
Drivers will be split into groups of no more than 3 and each group will have a dedicated instructor for the duration of the event. The instructors will deliver a set of core competencies for driver development. In order to achieve this effectively we will run two sessions during the day - a morning session and an afternoon session – see below for precise details. It is an ideal package for drivers who have never driven before at this type of venue and also offers ongoing improvement opportunities for those who do have previous experience. We are hoping that the majority of entrants will be in the car they use on a daily basis – i.e. you do not need a new sports car to take part in this event.
The main advantage of morning and afternoon sessions is that is gives continuity of training and keeps you totally involved, as a by product 3 hours open circuit time offers considerable more training time than the usual 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off all day approach. Feedback from delegates at our motorcycle events supports this approach.
You will be required to sign a ‘Disclaimer’ before being allowed to participate in the event – this is normal practice and part of the regulations imposed on us by circuit officials.
The cost to you is £135 in the event that we are oversubscribed; you will be entered and held on a reserve list.
If you want to take part on the day you can complete the attached form and return it with a cheque for £135 made payable to ‘The IAM’

Participants for the morning session should arrive between 7.30hrs and 8.00hrs Registration will run from 08.00 to 08.30. The compulsory pre-event briefing will commence no later than 08.40 so that you are prepared for your circuit time to commence at 09.00 prompt. Anyone arriving late will have to attend a personal briefing that will delay the start of their day and obviously limit their training time.
The Morning session which ends at 12.30 will be followed by a compulsory de-brief. You will then be required to move your car to the outside of the track to leave the assembly area clear for the afternoon participants. You are welcome to stay for the afternoon and can regain entry to the infield via the footbridge.
AFTERNOON SESSION
Afternoon session attendees may arrive any time during the morning and are welcome to watch the morning session and use the refreshment facilities. Your compulsory pre-event briefing will commence no later than 13.10 so that you are ready for your circuit time to commence at 13.30 prompt. As with the morning session, any late comers will have to go through the compulsory briefing prior to being allowed to participate in the event. The afternoon session will end at 17.00 followed by a de-brief prior to departure.
COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS
- It is your responsibility to ensure that:
- You hold and can produce a current driving licence for the vehicle you intend to use
- The vehicle is road legal, displays a current Road Fund Licence and that you can show a current MOT certificate if it is applicable
- Insurance is your responsibility, on normal track days most companies will not cover you because they involve pace making or speed trials with no controls, many insurance companies cover our Drivers on their Driver Skills days because they are undertaking improvement training. We therefore recommend that if you have any concerns you contact your insurance company and ask them – by all means send them a copy of this document. In order to maximise safety and in an attempt to minimise the risk of incidents, we will limit the number of cars on the circuit at all times and it is compulsory that drivers are accompanied by an instructor
- The circuit operates a mandatory 105-decibel noise limit. We are advised that this will cover all but the raunchiest race exhaust
- All participants will be subject to structured instruction in groups of no more than 3 delegates to 1 instructor. You will drive under the direction of your instructor – this does not mean that you will not be able to drive enthusiastically
DRIVING RULES ON THE DAY
There will be some local rules for the day relevant to procedures on the circuit e.g. overtaking entering and leaving the circuit etc. these will be explained during the pre-event briefing.
FUEL
Petrol and Diesel is available at the circuit at a slightly higher rate than garage forecourts and on a cash-only basis. It is therefore advisable to fill-up at one of the local filling stations en-route.
